Today was the last day of the European Fencing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The last titles of the best teams of the Continent won Hungarians in men's epee and Ukrainians – in women's sabre tournaments.
The final of the Men's foil team competition became a decoration of the fifth day of the of the European Fencing Championship. Italian Andrea Baldini, a European Champion in individual tournament, went on the track in the last duel of the final with Russian team at the score 35:40, and managed to make it even, and in an extra time delivered a victorious touché – 44:43.
The fourth day of the European Fencing Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, appeared to be painted in green-white-red colors of Italy. At first the Women’s foil team of this country celebrated the victory, and then Italians did the same in Men's sabre team competition.
It was officially declared in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) that the FIE President Alisher Usmanov established a prize fund of this European Championships from his personal means at the rate of 150 000 €.
Today in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) the first half of the European Championships came to an end. The last two golden medals in individual competitions won German epeeist Sven Schmid and Ukrainian sabre fencer Olga Kharlan.
This day of the European Fencing Championships in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) brought gold to the Beijing Olympic Champion, German epeeist Britta Heidemann, and Italian foilist Andrea Baldini, who couldn’t take part in last Olympics because of disqualification.
The most titled fencer in history, Italian foilist Valentina Vezzali and Russian sabre fencer Veniamin Reshetnikov became the first winners of the European Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

The news that Frantisek Janda, the President of the Czech Fencing Federation, was running as a candidate for the office of the President of the largest Zonal Confederation – the European one – and was supported by Alisher Usmanov, the FIE President, became known at the end of February 2009.
