European Cadet Championships ended with Italian “doblelet”

European Cadet Championships ended with Italian “doblelet”
7 March 2009
At last day of European Cadet Championships in Bourges (France) both gold medals had been won by the fencers from Italy. They celebrated victories in Men’s foil team and Women’s sabre team competitions.

Italian foilists have been undoubtedly the best in the individual tournament. They've got three medals - by one of each value. So they were obvious favorites in team's competition - and could fully justify this status. No one rival-team managed to put serious press on Italians - they had big advantage in every duel. In final they defeated Germany - 45:33. Bronze went to Poland - this medal became the first and the last for the team from this country.

In Women's sabre the "golden way" of Italians was much harder. They became Champions, though their road to the final could be ended in quarterfinal. Caterina Navarria started her duel against Anja Musch from Germany, when the score was 36:40. But Italian had won her match 9:2 and brought the victory to her team. The same situation repeated in the final. Navarria started the last duel of the Championship one point behind Russians - 39:40. But, once again, she managed to win 6:3 (total 45:43) and bring 5th golden medal for Italy.

As a result, Italy received in Bourges the largest amount of medals - 13 (5 golden, 2 silver and 6 bronze). Hungary ended Championships with 7 medals (2-2-3); France - with 6 (2-2-2).
